Star Wars and all

greetings from the year 2010.
i had the nerve-wracking privilege of doing a series of star wars posters for the alamo drafthouse theater in austin texas, and they're about to be released.

i've had a few emails regarding sales info. so here's all the info that's fit to print. they'll go on sale on friday on mondotees. mondo announces their poster releases via twitter, so if you follow that you'll see the exact time on friday they go up for sale.

edition wise, these shouldn't be super tricky to pick up, the regular versions are editions of 850, the variants are editions of 250. prices and other info can be found here.

unfortunately i won't be selling that many of these at all, so your best bet is to purchase them from alamo. plus it'll be cheaper to purchase them from alamo. plus i won't be selling mine for probably 3 weeks at least.

so, there ya be. i know everyone was hoping i was doing a poster for Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure - perhaps next year.

so, FAQtime
A: Will you be selling Artist Proofs (ap's)?
Q: yes

A: can i preorder / reserve a copy from you?
Q: no

A: when will you be selling yours?
Q: probably around January 17th or 18th, due to scheduling and vacation stuff. i won't even have copies in hand to sell til after January 10th probably.

A: can i buy a whole set of 3 regular / 3 variants?
Q: probably not. probably just sets of 3 will be sold.

A: will you be selling yours for more than mondotees?
Q: yes. since i have so few to sell, plus since they took awhile to do, probably will be selling them for more.

A: how will you sell yours?
Q: probably via the much despised email lottery, but i will send out an email beforehand with info on that.

A: anything else coming out this year?
Q: nope. that's it. this was what i was working on, and now i'm going to ingest large amounts of horse tranquilizers and crawl under my house and hibernate. or die.

so, there ya go, not sure if that's helpful or not, appreciate the emails, appreciate the positive feedback, warms my cold black heart to hear. thanks to alamo drafthouse / mondo for putting together such a fun series. looking forward to 2011's amazing Star Wars Prequel series. just kidding. i am not looking forward to that.

December 2010 fundraiser

SOLD OUT
SOLD OUT
SOLD OUT

---------------------------------------------------------
greetings. this past summer ryan august passed away. he was a fellow poster artist and leaves behind a family. figured it'd be nice to do something.

so, i'm preselling some posters, my next 3 alamo posters, plus their variants, with all the proceeds going towards ryan august's family. a total of 6 tstout alamo movie posters. for $550. a lot of money, i know. this is what you'll get. read below for more details.

FAQ:
question: what are the posters going to be?
answer: whatever the next 3 alamo posters i have come out. in that order. you can't pick and choose, that would be complicated. so just the next 3 to come out. and i'm sure they'll come out within the next 12 months.

question: what if you don't come out with 3 alamo posters with 3 variants this next year?
answer: i will. if they don't have variants (heaven forbid) then you'll get the next alamo poster after that. but if they have variants, you'll get a regular and a variant. the next 3 i do.

question: how much of the money is going towards ryan's family?
answer: 100%.

question
: is one of these posters going to be Star Wars, Star Trek, Fast & The Furious 3, etc?
answer: if you expect nothing more than 3 tstout alamo movie-related posters you won't be disappointed. plus 3 variants. i can't say any more than that, so please don't ask. leap of faith!

question: how many sets are you selling?
answer: five.

thanks for checking this out as always,
best
tyler

Quad Vs Regular Let The Right One In

so i thought it was worth explaining how the quad version of "Let The Right One In" came about. the people that commissioned this print, All City Media, actually requested it to be quad sized from the very beginning, so that's how i designed it. it wasn't until i was done with it that my friend Mitch suggested 30x40 posters might be a bit expensive to ship, frame, print, etc. so i scaled it down to 24x36 and made that the main run.

but, 30x40 does not scale down to 24x36, so i tried a few different things to fill up that extra space. tried having a large black border, tried putting the type on the side. etc. nothing looked good. so finally i did what i hate doing, went back and changed the artwork that i thought was perfect. filling in the sides with more trees, spacing things out a bit, moving the characters apart a bit. i actually really like 24x36 version fine, but the 30x40 quad has the distinction of being the original design, so thats worth something as well.

so, there ya go. for those of you that picked up 24x36, you get extra artwork and a better framing solution. for those of you that picked up the quad, you get what i would consider the original vision for the poster. both are cool. i think.

also, originally i had a different drawing of oscar but changed my mind, went in a different direction. so here ya go, seen here for the first time, the LTROI outtake.

Deus Contest ex Machina

so, how did the "Let the Right One In" lottery go?

well, for me it went ok. sure, the sale takes forever, i have to check and recheck all these emails, send out emails, check purchases etc. but, no one complained about the site crashing or anything, so that's good. most of the work is on my part which is good for everyone else.

some people prefer the old 'sale is at this scheduled time' way of doing things, i know. for me, after many sites crashing and angry emails, this seems to work better.

some people complained about the photo contest, saying 'its not fair that people have to buy a previous poster of yours to get this poster.' which isn't true at all, you don't have to buy anything. the photo contest is just a way of making sure some older collectors who've purchased my stuff for awhile now have a shot. i probably had about 100 photo submissions, and of those i randomly picked half. so, 50 posters to photo contest winners. since i had at least 250 posters, that still left 200 posters.

i then picked about 200 people, sent out emails, and am still waiting for everyone to purchase. which can take awhile since people are in australia and germany and spain etc etc. but at least this way everyone gets a chance, no matter what time code you're in.

i dunno, sure i'd like the sale to be over with in 20 minutes, sell posters on my tstout.com webstore, but right now that seems to not work. though i'm sure in the future i'll go back to that when my mailing list drops back down to 20 people.

as always i'm interested in hearing people's opinions and suggestions. at the end of the day i can't help but think its kinda surreal that i am having a lottery to see who gets to buy a poster, 'you've won the opportunity to give me your money!'

weird times man. anywho, thanks again, always appreciate everyone's business and many many kind words. if you need to email me make sure its at tyler@tstout.com - not that contest email, since that's full of contest submissions. i'll try to get back to you or my shipper person will.

Let the 3 different Right One(s) In

so, on this let the right one in poster, i have 3 different versions.

this was designed for a uk poster show, and their standard film poster size is 30x40" quad poster. so this poster was originally designed 30x40". i have a few of those sizes.

but i figured the main version i'd make available would be my standard 24x36 poster size. its the regular same size as all my movie posters. there is also a 24x36 variant, which doesn't have the red blood color but instead has a layer of glow in the dark ink. its a little yellow, and yellow + snow is not exactly a perfect match...but it is what it is. so i'll have those 3 versions. though mostly i'll have the regular size.

edition wise, i believe its about 300 regular edition / 100 variant edition / EDIT: 70 quad sized edition. though i don't have that many to sell, that's just the edition size.

if you're picked in the drawing i'll let you choose which version you prefer.

regular 24x36 version - glow in the dark variant (24x36)
in the dark30 x 40" quad sized

Phish Telluride followup

the lottery is over, and names have been picked and emails have been sent out to potential winners. thanks to everyone for submitting an entry, my apologies for not having enough posters to go around.

in the interest of full transparency - if you're wondering how many entries came in, it was around 860ish. 170ish of those attached photos. each email was given a number (in the order they were received, the first email being 1, the last being 860), and with the help of this random number generator - http://www.random.org/- i picked 18 numbers and those were the winners. then, having also flagged everyone who submitted a photo, from that smaller group i picked an additional 17 names. so, sending a photo increased your odds a bit.

i then searched as best as i could to make sure the winners hadn't entered more than once, duplicate mailing addresses, etc. i also searched by zip codes, and didn't come across any repeats. after confirming to the best of my knowledge they hadn't entered more than once, they were emailed a paypal invoice.

lots of people wrote really nice emails, though i am unable to respond to each person individually. i also treated all the emails the same to keep it fair.

not sure i'll be doing the photo entry again since it sucks to have people go through all that work of getting me a photo and not have anything to show for it. i do appreciate the photos though.

hopefully this was a fair way of selling these, and hopefully no one is that broken up about not winning. the posters came out kinda weird anyways, green and orange? i dunno man, i dunno.

thanks again.

new flatfile

so, finally dropped in on another set of big flatfiles. they are not as nice as my first set, some drawers don't open well, but they are better than posters stacked on tables.
flatfile
reorganizing took some time, damaged more than one poster on accident, always nice.

from this
before
to this
after
plus found this old one that i thought i'd lost
bo_diddley
nothing amazing but it actually hangs in Voodoo Doughnuts in downtown portland, i saw it there a few months back. kinda cool. poster must be 5 years old now.

also took a pic of this
metal_red
not really a variant, since its actually just a misprint where they left off the yellow layer since one of the other layers before it was screwed up, but then they printed the black, kinda cool, interesting to see how it would look without the yellow. its the only one i have so i'm not looking to sell it or anything, but still, kinda cool.

Emails regarding poster availability

sometimes i get emails from people. sometimes regarding posters. usually it breaks down into two types.

the ones i don't mind
: friendly emails that ask if i have a poster. stuff like 'Hey, if you have a copy of _______ I would love to pick one up.'

the other type i get are more like this: 'I am angry at you. I want to buy this poster and you won't let me? I will burn all other artwork I've purchased from you. You don't care about your fans. You are mean. Sell me this poster or else.'

sometimes i do have extra posters left over, not often, but sometimes. and i offer them to people randomly. but when i do have some left over to offer, i usually do it to those who write emails like the first category, the nice emails.

so try to be nice. at least if you want something from me.

shipping metal posters

why the difficulty shipping metal posters?

a few reasons.

1. i am not set up to easily ship heavy metal flat objects that are 24x36. i usually ship posters, rolled up, in poster tubes. so this is a completely different type of shipping.

2. i've done metal posters once before and a few of them were damaged in shipping. since i can't just print more, losing those few out of a small edition sucks, since there are that many less now. plus, i had to replace them with the few i had left over, which can get pretty expensive.

3. cost. shipping these costs a lot more than shipping posters. sure, i can just charge the buyer that, but then if its damaged i have to ship it again, and if they ship the damaged one back, i have to reimburse them for that shipping as well. it adds up. plus the printing cost of these metal posters is quite a bit higher than paper posters. approximately 13 times as expensive. not including shipping. so, having these damaged in transit is pretty costly.

4. time. it takes a lot more time packing up one of these, like 30 minutes, as opposed to 5 minutes for a paper poster. i will eventually sell some online i'm sure, via lottery or contest etc. but only when i actually have time to pack them up. right now i'm behind on my next job and just can't do that.

so, those are a few reasons i'm not shipping metal posters, and alamo didn't ship their metal posters. its just a lot of work and very risky. its not a 24x36 sheet of glass, but close.

again, if you're passing through brush prairie washington and would like to pick one up, let me know. if not, i will sell them down the road (after everyone's lost interest) when i have time / shipping supplies.

best - tyler
