Alan Forbes benefit - silent auction

edit: i believe the auction is now closed, thanks for all your bids

as some of you have heard, recently Alan Forbes had something happen to him,
you can read about it here. many artists have donated prints to help raise funds for his medical costs. you can see what prints have been donated here - also included are instructions on how to email Justin at Secret Serpents to place a bid.

i have a few prints among those being donated, viewable under 'tyler stout',
here - http://goo.gl/ZdUV6R

online bidding closes on Dec 5, then they will have an art show where people are still able to bid on the prints in person, the highest online bid being the starting bid. but the online bids have a good shot at winning the item, since people seem to bid more online than in person. but no guarantees.

all proceeds are going to help Alan, which is pretty crucial, he's the master behind these, and hundreds more.

Space Age to infinity...but not beyond Thanksgiving

update: i believe preorders have closed, thanks for all your orders, as always. calendars will be printing and shipping early this month, and one of these days, you'll open up your mailbox and bang, zoom! straight to the moon, alice!

i was recently able to work with tiny showcase on creating a letterpressed lunar calendar for 2014, and here is the result. the theme, obviously, is pencils. no that's not right. its space. the space beyond the space, as they say.

its going to be 13x19", a five color letterpress, which let me tell you, is pretty doggone big for a letterpress. it will be printed by Dan of DWRI Letterpress - who coincedentally enough printed my last tiny showcase print. and that one was only 7x9". and this one is 13x19"? crazy.

if you're interested, here is more info, including how to pick one up. this print will only be available at tiny showcase, i won't have any copies for sale ever.

five colors, PLUS the moons glow in the dark. just the moons. "how much do i have to pay for the extra moon glowing feature?" nothing, absolutely nothing. well, technically $30, the print costs $30 but they all glow.

right now its just a presale, which will actually end up deciding the edition. could land at 200, could land at 2000, but probably somewhere between there? i have no idea. perfect for all you werewolves who kinda have to plan ahead, plus a great addition for the family room in general.

"but its only good for one year, right?" hey, its good for forever, but its only 'technically' correct for the year of 2014. but i'm sure 2015 will have some Full Moons as well, so it'll definitely still be relevant. just in a more abstract sense. i still have posters on my wall for old movie screenings and old concerts, so this is like that. in a way.

plus you get a free custom made pencil. i probably won't even get any of those. preeeeetty cool.

anywho, its available for preorder through this next week, so think it over and read more about it here.

Migration 3 and Misc sets sale

UPDATE: thanks for all your orders, these posters and handbills and sticker sets are sold out.

-----------------
hi, thanks for your interest. if you are interested in purchasing my newest migration print, xx link removed xx - I AM LIMITING PEOPLE TO ONE POSTER TOTAL. orders with more than one will be refunded.

a bit of info about migration 3 - the regular is an edition of 160, the variant is an edition of 55. i won't be selling variants separately, just mixing them in with orders. if you definitely DON'T want the blue version, drop us an email. otherwise, you have maybe a 1 in 5 chance of getting a blue version. that also explains the price, i was going to do 40$ regular / 50 variant, but by raising the regular 3 bucks, it is the same difference. math, i don't know sometimes.

about the print - really i just wanted to do something fun for myself, and i've done a few different pieces in the past, so this kinda fits in line with those. it has silver metallic ink, for those of you silver metallic ink fans.

IN OTHER NEWS
if you are interested in purchasing a sticker set or handbill set, xx link removed xx -  I AM LIMITING PEOPLE TO ONE STICKER PACK AND ONE HANDBILL SET TOTAL. you can get one of each. but not multiples of each. orders with more than one of each will be refunded.

about these - i had some stickers printed recently and heres your chance to buy some. i have really two different packs, so you have a 50/50 chance of getting the alien trucker or the humungus sticker.

i also have some handbills that i ganged up with my migration print run, so they share colors with that poster. there are six 4x5" cards just done for humors sake. i'll be mixing the blue colorways in with the red colorways, so expect like 5 red colorways and 1 blue, possibly. or all red, i dunno. its a mix.

SHIPPPINGG : because these are all shipping separately, just to keep them from getting damaged, you can't combine shipping. but shipping is lower, you'll notice. a bit lower anyways.

Stuck on you

so, an update on stickers. they are shipping to me today. so sometime this week i will get them, and sarah will ship them off immediately. i actually have a new artprint coming out in the next few weeks, and i'll send out a mass email about that when i have those for sale. and those will get a sticker, as will future poster orders.

so, apologies on the delay, took a few weeks more than i was expecting. people that ordered packs will get a variety of these, 3 smalls circles, 2 big circles, 1 die cut. sarah will mix it up, so everyone won't get the same, that's the fun of it i'm sure. i was going to let it just be a surprise but at this late date i feel like i owe people a sneak peak at least. so there ya go. thanks for your patience.

stick it to the man (or woman, or bus stop)

UPDATE - Preorder is closed, stickers have been ordered. Thanks for all your orders.

Howdy. I usually try to include stickers in my poster orders, and am getting ready to get another batch made. in the past people have asked about sticker packs, and usually i don't do them, but i figured i'd try it out, see how much money i can lose. or make! but probably lose.

here's your opportunity to preorder a sticker pack. i'm only doing this for a few days, then i'll send out my order to the sticker place and preorders will be closed.

these are the same stickers that will be included in future poster shipments, so you can always wait and get them then.

included in this sticker pack:
- three 2" stickers
- one die cut sticker of a specific shape (aren't they all?)
- two 4" stickers.
- 2 grains of anthrax. just kidding. 4 grains. invisible to the human eye. so have your cats open these first.

why am i not showing actual images? because i am still fussing with them. expect them to be the worst and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

stickers could take up to 4 weeks to arrive (to me). then a few more days to get to you. order as many sets as you like, they're only stickers. i suggest ordering 0-1 set, what have you got to lose? 10$, plus shipping, that's what.

Behind the Lotto: Part XVI

people have emailed about how i sell my prints, as sometimes happens after a sale like this.  so i figured i'd take a minute and ramble briefly about it. bear in mind that i am still high on painkillers. and high on life.

Q: How do you pick people in the lottery / sale process?
A: I don't. Sarah does. I'm too personally involved in posters to participate, so i turned it over to her to keep it fair and completely random. Plus its a huge amount of work, going through and picking names, emailing people, keeping track of things like that.

Q: do you read people's emails during the sale?
A: truth be told, no. i leave it to sarah mostly. sales are stressful for me, so once i set up all the sales, update my site, send out the mass email, write a blog...once that's all done, i take a break for a day or two from my computer and just let sarah work her magic. i like emailing people, but during sales its just way too crazy. and i get emotional reading sad emails, so i leave it all to sarah.

Q: I heard you pick people based on their geographical location?
A: no, we don't. i might have done it that way at one point years ago, for one lotto, to spread sales out over the globe, but its really too much work.

basically, it breaks down like this. say i have 100 posters to sell, and 10 pages of emails, each page containing 50 email entries (500 emails total).  sarah would then pick 10 email entries randomly per page. 10 per page, 10 pages, 100 people picked.

she doesn't read the emails before hand, she simply marks them 'win' or whatever. THEN, she goes in and searches to see if each person picked entered twice, searching their name and address. then, if they just entered once, she emails them. once they order, she searches all the orders, making sure each person buying was picked in the lotto. there's always a few that weren't picked, and they are refunded.

plus, if the address is changed, as in, they entered one address and want it shipped to another address, they are refunded. we do this in case people are submitting multiple entries with different addresses, then whatever address is picked, changing that to the actual address. it is brutal to watch, so i just let sarah handle it.

its all done to hopefully create a semi-fair system of selling prints.

Q: please sell your posters via a random drop like mondo?
A: i look at it this way. people get a chance via mondo for the random drop. this is a second chance, and i do it differently. i don't have a website that could handle the random drop, and when its crashed in the past during sales, i've had to spend all day emailing people and sorting out sales. this way, sarah still spends all day on the sale, but at least we're not apologizing for the site crashing.

Q: are you aware people sell your prints on ebay, and you should do something about it? like personalizing the prints?
A: i am aware. i don't sell prints on ebay, nor do i willingly sell prints to anyone that sells on ebay. i don't get a cut of that money, and i don't encourage people to buy posters on ebay. what i try to do is give everyone the same chance to purchase from me. i do my very best.

Q: can i email you about my personal situation, why i should get a print?
A: absolutely. info@tstout.com - email away. i welcome all emails. however, sarah handles all emails regarding sales. if it talks about money, its a sarah email. and she goes by the book pretty much all the time, she doesn't want to make it personal, she keeps it business.

Q: i've never won a lotto. and Bob Schmalling has won 20 times.
A: i hate hearing that. i wish it was up to me. but it is a random system of picking people. if i said 'this next lotto is only for those who have never won.' i would still get a lot of people entering for their friends who had already won, and i would also get many complaints about punishing those who had won. and i'd have to keep track of who i had previously sold to. it would be a massive undertaking.

i value your business (as the cliche goes). and i hope these lottos aren't a huge time waster for you, and hopefully everyone gets picked in the next one.

gracias amigotrons,
best

Shaun of the Dead sale info

Lotto is closed as of 1PM. thanks for all your entries, i really appreciate them. between now and 2PM sarah will start sending out emails to notify those picked.

Greetings. If you're interested in purchasing the poster i did for the alamo drafthouse's screening of Shaun of the Dead, here is how to enter.

1. Submit your Name and Address to ** lotto closed ** by Wednesday, August 28th, by 1PM PST.

Sarah will pick from the email entries and send out emails Wednesday, August 28th, hopefully by 2PM PST.

Only submit your name once, via email. your address must be the address this poster is being shipped to. It must be the same as your paypal shipping address.

2. If your name is submitted more than once, you'll be disqualified from being picked. If your address is submitted more than once, you'll be disqualified.

3. If you purchase under a different name than the name you submitted, you'll be refunded and disqualified. If you are not picked at all, yet someone gives you a link and you purchase the poster, you'll be refunded and disqualified. Sarah checks each order as it comes in, and refunds those not picked.

- if you're picked, you can choose to purchase either the regular or the variant (as long as copies are available). You cannot purchase both. If you do, you'll be refunded on both.

Posters will be 65$ for the regular, 110 for the variant. Plus shipping. I ordered the stamps a bit late so these won't ship til next week, my apologies.

please email me at info@tstout.com with questions.

posters details:
24x36 / 7 color screenprint with metallic inks on cream paper.

FAQ:
Q: are these signed and numbered?
A: yes, they are indeed. and stamped on the back.

Q: why is this email going out so late?
A: i know, i know, i meant to send it way earlier. i had a dentist appointment and they drilled basically 6 cavities, and i'm all hopped up on pain killers, and its just a mess. but sarah wanted to do the sale wednesday, so i'm doing my best. she's handling the sale from here on out.

Q: you realize you left shaun's mom off the poster? she is arguably one of the most crucial parts of the film.
A: i know, i know. technically, she is on the poster, very small, in the background, but that doesn't make up for it. for some reason i always leave off a critical part of the film. in the back of my mind, maybe i'm thinking 'i'll just add her on the next Shaun of the Dead poster i do in 30 years.' but realistically, i'll be long gone in 30 years. killed by tooth decay.

Repo Man / Patrice O'neal poster sale info

ryan woods followup at the bottom -----------------

hello. this is information on how to purchase one of my repo man posters, or one of my patrice o'neal posters.

you can purchase either print here xxx sale closed xxx. or one of each. if you purchase repo man, you could get a regular, you could get a variant. chances are you will get a regular, 1 in 4 will get a variant. same with my patrice poster, 1 in 4 will get a gold metallic poster. limit 1 poster of each total, or none of each.

some info about the prints.
REPO MAN
i was asked by rob jones to contribute to the criterion release of repo man, and my artwork ended up on the wrap around booklet that comes with the dvd. mondo released a screenprint of the artwork, and that is what this is, a screenprint of the artwork that was included in the criterion dvd release. there are two versions, a regular and a glow in the dark variant. they look exactly the same during the day, when night falls one version glows in the dark. that version is the variant. i'm selling them for $50, and you'll know which version you get when you turn off the lights. also, they have different stamps on the back.

PATRICE O'NEAL
additionally, awhile back i was asked to contribute artwork to a benefit for patrice o'neal's family. the piece i did ended up being used as the poster sold at the event. additionally, the guy behind the event, danny ross, generously paid for my copies. since its a benefit poster, i figured it'd be appropriate to donate the proceeds on my end to something important. last october, i saw this piece, about a man named ryan woods, who was younger than myself and going through a terminal illness. i saw that he actually lived not that far from me, with his wife and two kids. he passed away in November of 2012, and i wanted to be able to contribute in some way to his family. and now i can. or you can, actually. i have 100 prints, and will sell them at $40 apiece, and all proceeds will go towards his family. assuming all sell, it should be 4k exactly. i'll post a paypal receipt afterwards for further verification, just so people know its all above board and i'm not doing anything scammy.

just an update on this: thanks for all your orders, i've paypal'd ryan woods family our donation, and here is a receipt. if you are interested in helping ryan's family more, you can read more about that here on ryan's website.

so that's it, thanks for reading, thanks to those of you that order, hopefully everyone has a good summer.

here are some FAQ's i could get

Q: can i purchase both a patrice poster and a repo man poster?
A: yes. but not multiples of both.

Q: can i say my preference, be it glow in the dark or gold metallic variants?
A: no, they will be shipped randomly, per sarah's random brain

Q: will they come with free stickers?
A: sarah always puts in stickers. so she tells me. always. sometimes people say 'i didn't get any'. and maybe that's true. or they could be stuck to the inside of the tube, she puts them between the poster tube and the paper the poster is wrapped in. so you could pull out the poster and the sticker could still be wrapped in there.

Q:  are these new stickers?
A: no. i got a great deal on some bulk stickers, but that means i have a ton of stickers i need to get rid of. 1500 of one design is just too many, i need to do batches of like 300, 400, keep it fresh.

PORTLAND, OREGON - delivery question

EDIT: thanks to clayton hopper for picking these up, a good guy, that guy.

hi,

i came across a deal on some flat files, they look like this
and they are located 2 hours EAST of portland, oregon. probably around the Dalles area. i know this is probably a longshot, but any of you northwesterners want to drive and pick them up (you'd need a truck for sure) - and bring them out to my place? i will pay for them of course, and will give you a metal Drive poster or wood Django poster to pay for your time. or if you don't want either of those, let me know what you're looking for that i've done in the last year and i'll see what i have.

so again, its a huge longshot, but i figured i'd put it out there, i don't have time to make the drive, but i would like them. LET ME KNOW YOUR DEMANDS!!

thanks for humoring me
best

done and done-r

so shipping of drives / attack the blocks is done. according to sarah. apologies on being a bit out of the shipping process, its kinda sarah's deal, so she handles the emails and whatnot. if there's any problems or concerns, please email us.

also, if you don't have a tracking number, email us. we'll get you one. occasionally the shipping system sarah uses doesn't download all the orders, so one or two slip through and we don't realize we haven't shipped them until they email us. so if you have any questions, drop us an email and we'll look it up, make sure its on its way.

hopefully the next sale is a bit more low key, and we'll try to be a bit more prepared beforehand, some rookie mistakes on this sale that i shouldn't have made, catching some damaged prints pretty late in the shipping process, which then threw my poster count off, stuff like that. hopefully we do better next time, but thanks to sarah for all the hard work, a better employee i could not ask for. you simply cannot pay enough for that kind of service. not that i actually pay her, but still, if i did, i couldn't even put a dollar amount on it.

alright, thanks again. chapter closed. next up, the barbarians LP.  pino donaggio at the height of his powers. book it mondo. plus ronnie jackson? it is literally like printing money. literally.

a further note on shipping drives / attack the blocks

gratings,
looks like the last of these are going out monday. apologies on the late shipping, we should have had the posters tubed up before the sale, then sarah would just have to work on shipping instead of packing and shipping. but they're finally out, and hopefully those of you who haven't got a tracking number yet will get one monday, if not drop me an email.

also, we're getting some damaged reports, seems like more than usual but we'll see. if you can hold off til we're done shipping we'll get you sorted out this next week, which will either be a replacement or a refund. if its a refund my apologies, we don't keep enough back to replace all damaged prints.

but, due to us being a bit slow, we're switching to 4" tubes in the future, either from yazoo or uline. just on the bigger 24x36 prints, we'll use up the rest of our 3" tubes on 18x24 prints. it might cost us a bit more but hopefully the lack of refunds will cover our bases, i'm guessing it will.

plus some of you have mentioned you got an extra handbill or something in your tube, while other just got two stickers. heres how that worked. i basically had a stack of extra handbills and whatnot, and i split it in half and told sarah to ship half with the drives and half with the attack the block. since we had two drives, that stack got further split in half for the drives, but a decent amount went out to drives, though it probably seems like more went out to atb buyers. plus only atb buyers had a chance to get a letterpress drive, whereas only drive people got a chance to get a atb handbill with nick frost on it.  it was completely random, i have zero idea who got what. but everyone who didn't get a handbill got two stickers instead. those are highly collectible by my children. so ship them back.

so, that's the state of the shipping union, apologies if i haven't emailed you, i've not been around my computer much lately. i did just get 10 new chickens today, bringing my total to 18. including the infamous Russian Orloffs. named after Count Orloff, naturally. plus we got a new kitten earlier this week and my new batch of bees last week. busy busy. repo man posters will either come with a free egg or a free spoonful of honey. AP's will get a free kitten.

Shippings, Refunds, Returns, tickets please...

so, as posters are leaving my house and arriving (hopefully at your house), i thought it would be a good time to go over the ol tstout inc policy regarding refunds, returns, damaged prints etc.

since we do all our poster business via paypal, our rules pretty much go by paypals rules. here's a place where they're laid out - PayPal Purchase Protection

that talks about damaged prints, that talks about things not arriving, it talks about all the stuff. you can either file with paypal or contact us directly (which is probably what we prefer, but that's up to you). once you email us about a damaged print or print not arriving, sarah will take it from there and let you know what to do.

SOMETIMES we can send out a replacement. SOMETIMES we'll have no more replacement prints, and have to refund your order. either way, you won't have to be stuck with a damaged print.

so that's all, just a reminder of what options you have when you purchase a poster. obviously i appreciate your understanding when it comes to the screenprinting process, that posters do get banged around when printing, that stray ink can fly here and there and that sometimes the poster you receive may not look identical to the poster you expected to receive.

to quote True Romance - "Can you live with it?"  - if you can't, then email us.

Email Blacklist / Lotto Submissions etc

in my previous sale writeup i said this
"- what happens if you don't get picked yet purchase anyway? sarah goes through all the orders, and when she finds an email or name that does not correspond with the list of people picked, that person is refunded. and will not get picked again, sadly. we usually have a few rounds of people getting picked, but those don't follow these rules get disqualified permanently."

lots of people interpreted that to mean i have a permanent blacklist set up.  i don't. sarah has a few people who purchased without having been picked in the lotto, and those people were refunded and she's avoiding picking them for awhile, but unless you've ordered a poster without having been given a link, and were refunded due to that, you're not on some list of 'do not sell to.'

so you're good. and if you're concerned, drop us an email and i will reassure you that you're good. if you have a refund from me in paypal that says it was refunded because you purchased a poster without being picked to do so, then you might not be good, and you can also drop us an email.

my goal, sell posters in a fair and honest way. sarah's goal, ship them. i don't want to get into a war with anyone, i just want peace. and quiet.

Drive / Attack the Block poster sale info

thanks for your entries, the lotto is closed, emails will be going out tomorrow (wednesday april 4th) at noon, PST

---------------------------------
hello,
if you're interested in purchasing either of my drive posters or my attack the block poster, this is how to do so:

please read through all the instructions, since we always end up refunding a few people that didn't.

1. submit your Name and Address to tstoutmondo@gmail.com by Tuesday, April 2nd, by 11:59PM. sarah will pick from the email entries and send out emails Wednesday, April 3rd, 12PM PST.

- Why does your paypal address need to match up? because otherwise you could submit a million different entries, and after getting picked give us the actual address to ship to. tricksy.

- what happens if you don't get picked yet purchase anyway? sarah goes through all the orders, and when she finds an email or name that does not correspond with the list of people picked, that person is refunded. and will not get picked again, sadly. we usually have a few rounds of people getting picked, but those don't follow these rules get disqualified permanently.

- those that are picked will be given the opportunity to purchase either drive print or attack the block print (whatever is in stock). those picked will be limited to one poster total. not one of each version. if i don't sell out after the sale, then people that have purchased can purchase another print. by limiting people to one print total, it spreads the posters out over the maximum amount of people possible.

regular posters will all be $65 plus shipping.

variant posters will all be $110 plus shipping.

i'm probably making this too confusing. just email your name and address to tstoutmondo@gmail.com and you'll be set. if you hear from us on Wednesday, we'll walk you through how to pick up a print. don't email more than once, don't purchase the poster if someone else sends you a link. easy enough.

Awesome, Texas

so, back from texas. it is literally a big blur. thanks to all of you that came, thanks for the handshakes and the compliments, it was a trip.

big thanks to mondo for flying me and sarah out there, it continually amazes me how friendly and concerned they are for me at times, and reminds me why i enjoy working with them as much as i do. the type of people that would spend $1000 to make $100, and i mean that as a compliment, a better group of guys to work with i have not found in this world. Justin was super cool, hearing Mitch laugh made me happy, and Rob Jones is where the party starts. and thanks to the rest of the mondo crew as well for all their hard work and dedication, particularly Mo, who is just a great guy who never let things get out of control, at least for me.

also thanks to ken taylor of course, the first time i had the pleasure of meeting him in person and he's one of the coolest guys in the world. it was an honor to be in a show with an artist of his caliber.

thanks to jay shaw who i also met for the first time, great fellow, thanks to kevin tong who i saw again, great guy as well, thanks to daniel danger, thanks to my friend jon smith, all great artists who i had some cool conversations with.  plus i met jay ryan and dan grzeca in person for the first time, two personal heroes of mine.

i'm probably forgetting a billion people. thanks to the facebook page guys, bryan and chris and aaron for organizing an amazing bbq event, all the guys that showed up, was fun meeting everyone in person.

thanks to dustin for hosting another bbq, for opening up his home. wonderful people, that is what impressed me most about austin, the quality of people i met there. i know it sounds cliche, but i'm just laying out what i'm feeling man. its emotional.

EDIT: well shoot - i forgot to thank sarah, apologies to her. she has been a trusted assistant and faithful employee at TSTOUT GLOBAL© WORLDS®, Incorporated - for many many years, and this trip would not have been possible without her organizing everything and letting me know what i was supposed to do next. i literally would have been lost without her, there's a reason she knows my PIN number and i do not. also, thanks to thomas wilson, who made the journey as well, he's always been there for me and i will miss him dearly.

so that's it, over and done with, i am retiring from posters, i had a good run, went out on a mid to high range note, and can now slowly crumble into dust. at the very least i can get caught up on everything in my life non-poster related, like catching up Justified and Southland.*

a life in pictures -

EDIT: i am not actually retiring from posters. i'm not even sure that you can retire from something like that, you simply stop making them. barring some horrific accident, i'll be peddling my wares again soon enough.

Unflattening a Poster - by bryan henderson

my friend bryan knows a bit more about the care and maintenance of posters, and sometimes he is kind enough to answer questions that people email me. i thought this one was a nice response to someone asking about flattening a print (and some framing tips as well, though really bryan could write a whole other blog post about framing).

Question From Bill
---------------------------------------
Long story longer, I was lucky enough to get one of your Star Trek II regular prints  that was signed by you and had that badass Ceti eel stamp on the back. I received it rolled up in the original mail tube you sent to the guy who bought it from your website. My question is what is a good method to flatten the poster that causes no creases, and how do you go about framing it? I tried to look online and I really am confused. I want to keep it in mint condition and not cause any damage to it, and wanted to be able to frame it and have it hang on my wall. Should I go to a professional frame place, or is buying a nice museum type frame DIY just as good? Some people I know had their artwork ruined at a professional framing place. Could you give me some method that you have used or know? Maybe you have a link to a good framing place or something?

----------------------------------------
BRYAN SAYS:
Howdy, Bill,

Wow, so that print has been stored rolled for about a year! I do recall that Sarah shipped those prints out using a 3" Yazoo tube, so that print will probably be in a tightly rolled state. In this case, I would go about flattening the print very carefully.

You will want to take the kraft roll out of the tube and let the print kind of relax in a curled state for a few days. It will unravel/relax a little bit.

While the print is relaxing, order yourself some acid free tissue paper and a couple of 30x40 pieces of foam core (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KNPLLU & http://www.framedestination.com/mount_board/foamboard_acid_free_artcare_3_16_inch/item/MB3ATF00000000/ ) . If you're buying prints in the future and need to unravel them, this is a good investment.

Now that the kraft roll has relaxed for a bit, place it on top of and at the end of one of those pieces of foam core and unravel it slightly by hand so that the top is exposed (be extremely careful here - be sure to not let the print bend in on itself in any way since that will cause creases). Put some acid free tissue paper on the edge of the print to act as a buffer, and then put some heavy books on top. Be sure to cover the entire edge of the print, not just the corners, etc. I usually start by putting a book on either corner and then I put books on the center. If you don't have any acid free tissue paper, just use really really clean books. The books will hold down the print so you can unravel it fully.

Unroll the print fully. Place books on the other end in the same way as the top. Again, be extremely careful not to let the print bend in on itself. Also be careful to use really clean books or the acid free tissue buffer between the books and the print.

Place books around both long edges of the print. You will want to basically have books covering the entire edge surface area of the print so that it will flatten evenly.

Place the other piece of foamcore over the print/books so that the print won't be exposed to UV light while it's flattening. Let it flatten for one or two weeks. Start taking books off one end. If the print is still curling in on itself, you will need to let it flatten for longer. If you feel as though the print is very very lightly curling, you could take all the books off, put one sheet of acid free tissue paper on top of the print, and then place the other piece of foam core directly on the print to allow it to flatten even better (aka the foam core sandwich). If you do go the route where the other piece of foam core is flattening the print from up top, put some books on top of the sandwich to hold the top piece down better.

When you take the print the framer, just use your foam core sandwich as transportation to the framer. I just put really big clips along the edge of the foam core sandwich to keep it together.

As far as a framer goes, don't use chain stores like Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc. Try to find a local independent framer. Even then I would be weary. Always use matting (the framer really has to know what they are doing to not use matting because they will have to use spacers and not put pressure on the print). Always use Bainbridge alphamat or alpharag 4-ply. For the backing in the frame, don't use foam core (that can deteriorate over time) - use Bainbridge alpharag 4-ply. Have them use museum glass. Tell them you want it done reversible archival - no hinging tape (have them use mounting strips like these http://www.framedestination.com/photo_corners/4_inch_clear_mounting_strips_l533-4015/item/FAPHCN4MST0000000000/ ). Make sure they are using frame sealing tape on the interior of the frame (to keep the wood from outgassing to the print) and acid free kraft paper on the outer back portion of the frame to act as a dust cover.

For a standard 28x40 frame for a 24x36 piece, you're probably looking at around $250 to $350 from a professional framer. I don't really know how much they charge, but $350 is the very maximum you should pay.

thanks again bryan, great info to have for those of you interested.

Packing A Poster - by bryan henderson

Occasionally my friend bryan emails me or a friend of mine suggestions on packing, shipping or framing a poster. i thought people might enjoy reading a bit about his thoughts on shipping a poster. here is a recent email from him:

----------------------------------------
BRYAN SAYS:
I do have some shipping tips if you want to use them later or whatever. If not, that's cool, too, but I've been meaning to tell you about them anyway. I know you have to roll a lot of prints really fast, so my tips could be worthless. Still, they might be of some use.

Whenever I roll prints up, I always put some kind of covering over them so that the inks are protected. The kraft paper can easily scuff the inks. The premium product to use for covering prints is glassine (I use the 32x40 sheets http://apps.webcreate.com/ecom/catalog/product_specific.cfm?ClientID=15&ProductID=25110 . You can also order from U-Line. ). Acid free tissue paper is a tad cheaper, but it's harder to use. I always order that stuff off Amazon if I'm in a total bind ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KNPLLU/ref=ox_ya_os_product )
Here's an example of rolling a print with something over it: http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m559/CrustaR/bride11_zps6b908c7f.jpg

I think rolling the print smaller than the tube is a great idea since it's so much easier to remove the print from the tube, but I go a little further with it in two ways. First, I use painter's tape over the kraft paper (painter's tape is a lot easier to remove than normal tape and is easier to handle). I fold down the painter's tape up top so that you have a little tab you can pull to open the kraft roll. Be sure to place the tab so that when you pull down on it, it doesn't catch on the edge of the paper (hard to explain, but check out the photo): http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m559/CrustaR/Companion_Guide_1/comp02.jpg . I also put painter's tape in three areas on the tube: The middle and both sides.

Second, I square off the ends of the kraft roll so that it won't move around in the tube. Instead of the kraft roll bouncing around in the tube, it is supported on each end (instead of it being like this ( --------- ), it's like this ( |-------| ) ). In other words, I use some kraft paper to make each end look like this: http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m559/CrustaR/Guide/12-tabtapedone.jpg , http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m559/CrustaR/Guide/12-tabplace.jpg

Finally, I make sure the kraft roll can't move around from side to side, so I use bubble tape or plastic bags to kind of pack it in. http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m559/CrustaR/Companion_Guide_1/comp05.jpg Usually I can tell that I have used enough packing material if I shake the tube, and I can't hear the kraft roll inside moving.

One more thing. I noticed you guys use 3" Yazoo tubes. Might I recommend 4" tubes? It always makes me nervous packing a 24x36 print in a small 3" tube, haha. But I guess if cost is an issue and if it's worked before, 3" works great, too.

----------------------------------------

(note: sarah is looking into some of these, but probably won't do all of them, so i don't want to say this is how we'll be shipping prints from now on (mostly cost reasons) - but i thought it was a nice list of ideas regardless that people might find helpful.
